Sarah Cambot keeps Les Vertes in the top division!
In fine rain, but in front of a capacity crowd at the Stade Salif-Keita, Les Vertes secured a point that was enough to guarantee their place in France's women's football elite.
Also battling for survival, Strasbourg got off to a better start at the Salif-Keita on Wednesday evening, quickly putting the ball in front of Maryne Gignoux's goal. Hoeltzel opened the scoring, but the goal was later disallowed for offside. But the second chance for the attacking midfielders was the right one. Her shot from the edge of the area struck the post (ASSE 0-1 Strasbourg, 7th). A minute later, Maryne Gignoux saved from Hoarau with a heavy header. The Alsatian keeper did the same after a Sarah Cambot routine (11th). The St Etienne keeper was again called into action, coming out of her goal to tackle in front of Joseph (13th). Cindy Caputo took advantage of a stray ball between the Strasbourg defenders to break free but lost her duel (23rd). The rest of the half was dominated by duels and a battle in midfield, but there were no major new chances.
On the stroke of half-time and after a well-constructed move, Joseph found herself in a position to shoot, but her effort was too wide of the mark and failed to find anything other than the side netting (50'). Sarah Cambot also failed to hit the target after an off-balance effort from distance (61st). Two minutes later, Maryne Gignoux made a good save from her opposite number (63rd), followed by a duel won by the St Etienne goalkeeper and a Faustine Bataillard header (64th) to keep Les Vertes in the game. In response, Amandine Pierre-Louis, playing down the left, cut inside and took her chance from distance. It was on target but saved (65'). From more than 20 metres out, Cindy Caputo took her chance and saw her shot deflected just over. Amandine Pierre-Louis‘ header from the following corner was saved (68’). Adèle Connesson was active after coming on, allowing Les Vertes to play higher up the pitch. However, her volley was too weak to trouble Wahl (90'). But Wahl could do nothing about Sarah Cambot's perfectly placed header in injury time (ASSE 1-1 Strasbourg, 90th + 3). A point enough to keep Les Vertes in the top flight!
Marc-Antoine Brihat and Les Vertes travel to Guingamp on 7 May for the final round of league fixtures.
