Monaco wins in the Chaudron

Les Verts lost 1-3 to Monaco, who are in contention for second place, in the 32nd round of McDonald's Ligue 1 matches.

The context

Les Verts return to a sold-out Chaudron this Saturday, with over 30,000 fans in attendance for the tenth time this season, and a new Champions League contender in Monaco, after last weekend's 4-1 defeat at Strasbourg. For Les Verts, the stakes remain the same: to pick up valuable points in the race for survival.

The XI

With Lucas Stassin absent, Eirik Horneland has opted for the very young Djylian N'Guessan to play up front. The 16-year-old striker of the ‘Green Generation’ is assisted by Irvin Cardona and Zuriko Davitashvili. St Etienne's midfield and defensive line remain unchanged from previous outings.

The game

In a boiling stadium, the home side quickly calmed the atmosphere. Akliouche quickly found the net with a clinical attacking move, easily slotting home a cross from the left (ASSE 0-1 Monaco, 2nd). Les Verts responded by creating a huge opportunity. Launched by Djylian N'Guessan, Irvin Cardona chipped the ball over Kohn but the ball went just wide of the goal (7th). A few minutes later, Florian Tardieu tried a long-range volley. It went well but was deflected by the back of a Monegasque (16th). The first goalscorer of the match created two huge chances in the next quarter of an hour. First, he broke down the left flank. But his attempted cross in front of goal was blocked by ‘Larso’ (22nd). Then, after a brilliant through ball, he found himself alone in front of the keeper. Once again, the keeper made a stratospheric save (29th)! After a period of weakness, Les Verts put together a superb team effort. Léo Pétrot found himself on the end of it, in the penalty area, but missed the ball with his left foot. What a shame (45th + 2)!

The first chance of the second half came from Les Verts! Irvin Cardona opted to shoot from ambush, but was thwarted (46'). From a corner, Embolo could only head wide at the far post (53'). After a brilliant pass from Pierre Ekwah, Zuriko Davitashvili broke down the left and into the box. His right-footed effort was just wide of the target, despite the efforts of his team-mates to provide solutions in the centre of the box (54'). After a false rhythm, Zuriko Davitashvili took his chance from the edge of the area and sent a missile into the top corner of Kohn's net (ASSE 1-1 Monaco, 65th). The Chaudron was embraced... and then chilled a second time when Al-Musrati took advantage of a ball leaving the Saint-Etienne penalty area and fired a first-time shot past Gautier Larsonneur (ASSE 1-2 Monaco, 68th). Balogun was then sent clear on the edge of the area and fired past the keeper to make it 1-3 Monaco (78'). Exhausted, the players in the match did not offer any other serious opportunities, with Ibrahima Wadji's header going over the target (88th).

At the final whistle, Monaco put the pressure on Marseille and moved back into second place behind Paris. Les Verts, meanwhile, remain one point behind Le Havre.

Next

The final sprint has definitely begun. Les Verts travel to Reims on Saturday before hosting Toulouse on Matchday 34. Every point is crucial.
