Julien Le Cardinal moves to Les Verts

On Monday, ASSE and Stade Brestois reached an agreement regarding the transfer of defender Julien Le Cardinal (28).

Julien Le Cardinal, 28, is the third signing of the winter transfer window for Les Verts! Born in Brittany, the defender arrives in Forez from Stade Brestois.

Born in Saint-Brieuc, Julien Le Cardinal played for Stade Briochin in National 2 before returning to the club after a spell at the Guingamp training center. He signed with Bastia in the summer of 2019. It was a choice that paid off, as his adventure on the Île-de-Beauté proved to be a positive one, as evidenced by his 79 appearances marked by a double promotion to National then Ligue 2 BKT before staying up in his last season with the Corsican club.

Recruited by Paris FC in 2022 and notably scoring a goal at the Stade de France, he played only 13 matches with PFC before attracting the attention of Ligue 1, and more specifically RC Lens, who signed him as a substitute in the fall. He again played 13 matches with the northern club before another transfer, this time to Stade Brestois.

Returning to Brittany to play for Brest, Julien Le Cardinal took part in 15 matches during the 2023-2024 season, a historic year for the Breton club, which qualified for the Champions League. He also played in four matches in Europe's premier club competition the following season, notably taking on Barcelona and scoring the only goal in the victory over PSV Eindhoven. In total, the defender played 42 matches with SB29.

Julien Le Cardinal has now signed up for an adventure in green until 2027! Welcome to Forez, our new number 26!

Julien Le Cardinal:I am very happy to be part of this special club, with its history and all it has contributed to French football. I am very excited to start this adventure, meet my new teammates, and discover the Green Army this weekend!

Loïc Perrin, Sporting Director of ASSE: "Julien is an intelligent and versatile defender. Although he mainly plays in the center, he can also play on the wing. He will bring us experience and new energy to the locker room. His career should make him a leader on and off the field. He is fully operational and will quickly integrate into the team."

Julien Le Cardinal's “Vert l'Avenir” commitment

As part of its “Vert l'Avenir” CSR initiative, AS Saint-Étienne is offering all its employees, including its players, the opportunity to commit to one of the four areas of focus of its ASSE Cœur-Vert association: Environment, Citizenship, Sport for All, and Health.
