Jean-Louis Gasset: "We were spent afterwards"
Logically disappointed by the setback against Bordeaux this afternoon, the Verts coach expected this failure. He remains nevertheless satisfied with the state of mind displayed by his team who are still eligible to qualify for the Europa League.
How do you feel after this defeat?
We got used to winning, so I’m disappointed but today we didn’t deserve more than one point. If we had gotten a good momentum going, I thought that we could have won but when we kept striking the bar and the posts of the net, I felt that victory was no longer in our grasp. We tried and we were spent afterwards. You can’t lose that attitude.
What speech did you give at half-time?
We had to play more offensively, so I replaced Selnaes who had just gotten a yellow card in order to add another striker to the field. We struck the posts and the bar of the net. We deserve to have taken a point due to the way we dominated during the second half but we didn’t play a good game defensively during the first half to hope for more. Bordeaux was superior to us physically.
Is your team experiencing a decline?
We’ve felt it coming for a while. This week, I tried to not to strain everyone but playing at 3pm, in this heat, didn’t help us. However the public pushed us forward, if we had been like them, we would have maybe won this match.
Do you have any regrets concerning the missed penalty kick?
I designate who the two shooters are and then it’s up to the players to score. I don’t blame Rémy Cabella at all because you have to have guts to take a penalty kick.
Will this defeat change your discourse?
Not at all! With a bit of lucj, we would have taken another point and that wouldn’t have changed our situation very much. We’ve only lost one of the last fourteen matches and there are still six points that we can take, that’s what I’ll tell the players at the beginning of the week.
