Jean-Louis Gasset: "Thank you to the team, thank you to the fans"

Satisfied by the state of mind demonstrated by his players, the Verts’ coach savours the victory earned against Olympique de Marseille (2-1).

What is your response to this victory?

I say thank you to the team, thank you to the fans! Wahbi Khazri is the last link in the chain and this evening he did his job very well by scoring but he is not the only one that we must thank. We must also thank Stéphane Ruffier, Loïc Perrin and Yann M'Vila. The majority of the players worked hard.

What allowed your team to retake the lead during the second half?

In the first half, I found our players to be a bit nervous. We spread ourselves too thin, we discussed the decisions and, in the middle of the field, Marseille was stronger than us technically. During the break, I said to my players that we could turn things around if they were capable of getting on the same wavelength. That’s what we did.

Being in third place in Ligue 1, ahead of OL, before the derby is that satisfying?

If you had told us that at the beginning of the season, we would have smiled but today we’re not smiling. We didn’t steal any of our points. On the contrary, there were several decisions made against us that cost us points. On our home turf, our track record is interesting. We see that, even against a good team, even when we play more poorly, we have the same state of mind as our fans. We suffer but we give it our all. This evening, we were a bit lucky but we’re proud of the victory.

Can your team still progress?

When you look at the first half, you see that we have much progress to make in regards of passing the ball and much progress to make technically speaking. Physically speaking, we can progress as well. This evening, it was only our second high-level game since the beginning of the year.

What ambiance are you expecting for the Derby after this victory against OM?

We always count on the Cauldron! I know that this Sunday will be a special match for all the people that speak to us about the Derby everyday. For the moment, we’re going to savour this victory obtained with difficulty against Marseille and we’re going to start recuperating because I saw some players who were happy but tired.
