Jean-Louis Gasset : "Many emotions"
After the success of his team against Nice (3-0), which translates into 4th place in the rankings and a qualification for the UEFA Europa League, the Stéphanois coach expressed his joy and his pride.
What are you feeling after this victory?
Many emotions. These fans, this joy, this stadium (he smiles)… It’s true that it’s good to experience all this.
What emotion are you feeling the most?
I’m proud. Proud of the work we’ve done, of this group of players. With a mix of established players and of youths who have made progress. They were with us all season and won the Gambardella Cup. Some played. Others deserved to be on the field but I only had three possible substitutions. I’m also proud of the choice of players that we made.
What is your judgement of your team’s performance?
We suffered. We had a team that, without Rémy Cabella and Wahbi Khazri, lacked technical flexibility. But, we demonstrated our other values. We defended very well and were very efficient. Robert Beric? He’s a striker. You always judge a striker in relation to his efficiency. Last week, he could have tied the game. He knew that. But, this week, he worked relentlessly in front of the net. This evening (Saturday evening), he was rewarded.
Pierre-Yves Polomat’s injury forced you to play Wesley Fofana as a right-back.
The right-back position put pressure on us all season. We found a solution with Kévin Monnet-Paquet when Mathieu Debuchy wasn’t available. Today (Saturday), neither one of them was present. But, Wesley Fofana, the 18-year old defensive trainee, was hungry to play. In the first half, he sometimes positioned himself poorly in relation to his direct adversary. But, at half time, we made the necessary adjustments.
Do you regret having come so close to 3rd place but to no avail?
By earning a qualification for the UEFA Europa League with 4th place, we had a very good season. It could have been an exceptional season, We were there, no far off, we made our adversaries worry until the last two days of our season. When we see the difference in numbers and in budgets, we tell ourselves that it makes sense who the Top 3 are.
