Jean-Louis Gasset: «A breath of new life»

Satisfied with his team’s victory far from the Cauldron, Jean-Louis Gasset rejoices to have seen ASSE play the type of football that he praises.

What is your first impression after this well-deserved victory?
In the first half, we played very well. We had a good command of the game, created openings, the game was fluid and we were full of confidence. That’s the type of football that I like and that’s what I try to instil in my players.

You only didn’t capitalize on a few openings...
Our adversary had difficulty holding back our attacks but near the opponent’s goal, we still had trouble making good passes or good calls. It’s a complicated aspect of football and it’s at that level that we have to progress. I know very well that, against more well-established teams, we won’t have the same ball possession. We have to change up our style.

Can we speak of a “new beginning” for Saint-Etienne?
We’re not far off from that but during the last half hour we gave too much ground. We’re not yet ready to play a 90-minute game at this level but that’s normal enough when you consider the fact that our reinforcements were lacking game time in their former clubs. In any case, their addition to the team has been a positive one, which is breathing new life into the team and makes us believe that a lot of happiness is just right around the corner.

Mathieu Debuchy, the last recruit, distinguished himself during his first match. How do you feel about him?
He’s off to a great start, that’s true. He scored a goal and made almost an assist that allowed us to score our second goal of the evening, but I’m not surprised. The only thing that worries me, is how much of the game he was able to play. After an hour of game, he waved to me to say that everything was going well. Right now, we’ll have to be attentive to how long we train these players who have just joined us and who aren’t yet back in the swing of things.

Would you say that this is the greatest victory for the team since you took over as coach?
Yes because our last three victories were on our home turf where we had favorable circumstances. Today, I had the impression that we were beginning to master the game and from the moment we walked onto the field we wanted to win.
