Jean-Louis Gasset : "Celebrate with our fans"

Whatever happens Saturday evening, the Stéphanois coach is already satisfied by having given the public back their smiles and their pride. He wants to finish well and celebrate a successful second part of season in the Cauldron.

How did the last week of work go?

There was good humour. Everyone wants to play this last match and celebrate with our fans. I have a great group at my disposal since, even injured, the players wanted to be present for the matches.

What will be the major issue of the last match of the season?

The major issue is first of all to win the match. We’ll look at the other results after having taken the three points. We’re not masters of our destiny even if we remain hopeful, of course, because there are surprising results every weekend. Let’s enjoy ourselves and share that enjoyment with our fans. Let’s put ourselves in the necessary frame of mind in order to finish our work because we’ve only been defeated twice recently. Saturday, we won’t have any excuses. We have to throw ourselves into the game.

Can you give us more news about Rémy Cabella who had an operation last Tuesday after suffering a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of his left foot?

The operation was a success. He’ll be at the match Saturday because he would have really loved to play this last match in a packed stadium.

Do you fear a drop in momentum after the two consecutive defeats that put an end to the 13-match, undefeated streak?

We finished with some difficulties as things were really dragging on for a while. Since the game against Paris, we’ve been less spry and success has escaped our grasp. We were solid in Monaco and we got a penalty at the 90th minute. It was a cruel twist of fate but before we had luck on our side. That in now way, shape or form alters our dynamic because we have the feeling of having fulfilled our contract. We’ll be happy to play in a full stadium, which was unthinkable a short while ago.

“I hope that we’ll celebrate the end of the championship in a dignified manner”

Christophe Galtier will come back to the Chauldron this Saturday. What type of encounter are you expecting?
We’re more relaxed, him and me. He worked here for eight years. We rubbed shoulders in Spain during the training trip there in January. We wished him good luck because there was work to be done for each of us in our respective clubs. He couldn’t take advantage of the transfer window but he knew how to get a streak going at the very moment when it was needed. With four matches to go before the end of his season, he’s already won three of them. He’s come back from the brink and for him this match should be a celebration as well. And I’m very happy about that.

And concerning the players, who fled last week after a gruelling season?

We don’t know how the players will react. They’ve must have been worrying since January and they must be a bit more relaxed now. Against Dijon, they wanted to win at any cost. We’ll surely play offensively in order to score goals and so that everyone enjoys the game.

What will be your state of mind after the final whistle, regardless of the outcome?

I’ll be happy to have given people back their smiles. Happy to have given back to our fans, and it’s them that tell me this, their honour and their pride. Happy to see a full stadium. I’ll have an obligation to be emotional. We’re not made of iron. I hope that we’ll celebrate the end of the championship in a dignified manner. Since we acquired the 42 points, everything else has been icing on the cake. The rankings, the Europa League qualification? The smile and the happiness of the public is enough for me.
