Jean-Louis Gasset : "Add other elements to our game"
Despite Rémy Cabella tieing the game at the very end of the match, the Stéphanois coach left the match feeling disappointed overall with the performance of his players in Amiens (2-2). He’s expecting a comeback next Sunday against Bordeaux.
You experienced a wide range of emotions this evening…
Yes. In such a situation, where your adversary fights tooth and nail and where you don’t manage to score, whether it be because of the bar of the net or because of the opposing goalie, generally you lose. To have tied the game at the 95th minute is a small ray of sunshine.
What is your analysis of this tie game?
In the first half, we created three or four very clear openings to score. Our opponents had ten players on the field, we had the ball but we passed it too slowly. We’ll have to add other elements to our game if we want to obtain our objective, which is very lofty. This evening, we played against a team that fought, that showed us what it’s like to fight for one another. We didn’t do that. We didn’t work well together, we were almost arrogant. We’ll have to modify our mindset. I found that we didn’t put in enough effort. They had the desire to win and you could say that we didn’t share that desire. However, that’s unusual for us.
What was lacking in order to have won?
If we had scored fifteen to twenty minutes before the end, when we had the openings that we had but instead hit the goalposts with the ball and had the ball stopped by the goalie, we could have won the match. Like we could have lost if Rémy Cabella hadn’t tied the game at the very last second. Amiens’ players finished with cramps. They must find it harsh that we caught up to them at the last second. We didn’t give up and we finished the match on a high note.
Which mechanisms can be put in place for the last few weeks of the competition?
We have 50 points with 7 matches left to be played. We’ll still play four times in the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, that’s true, but we’ll have to pull ourselves back together. Because, this evening, we weren’t enough. When the competitors deliver below-average performances, we always say that we’ll take advantage of it but, before us, there are teams that are defending what they’ve earned.
