Jean-Louis Gasset : "A team that's allergic to defeat"
The Stéphanois coach praised the mindset of his team, who delivered a great performance in the second half to win the match in Monaco.
What is your analysis of this match?
In this first half, we were restless, we didn’t control the match like we normally do. They put the pressure on us. We were happy to enter the locker room just one goal behind. We had to change our game plan and use another, one much more academic. We brought the ball out so poorly that it was complicated. We need to have the ball. We just earned 19 out of 21 points with, as always, high points and low points. Today, we began very poorly, contrary to last week’s match. There’s still progress to make. But we used the ball well in the second half, which frightened our opponent.
Do you think you’re getting closer to the European Cup?
I always say that you first have to play before looking at the other teams. Our performance was irregular this evening but we did the work. We’re going to maintain the same humility. Two teams will play in the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in a row and we know that our fans will push us forward. There will be two finals in the Cauldron.
What changed at the break?
At half time, I told them “What pressure do we have?” We’re asking you to play a Football match. There are worse things, right? We needed the players to be clear-headed again and for them to regain their performance level. We needed to be very calm. Everyone was unfocused. That’s not us. This team is allergic to defeat.
Rémy Cabella was involved in the three goals. How do you judge his performances?
He’s currently realizing a great end to the season. He was criticized because he was overdoing it, which irritated people. That’s where we see the great Cabella and, especially, the decisive Cabella. The three substitues did what they needed to do.
Were you surprised to hear a good portion of the stadium jump for joy after the third goal?
Towards the corner post, it was all Vert! We like that our fans are with us even if we understand those who don’t come. Like them, we were united regarding what happened May 5, 1992.
