Jean-Louis Gasset: "A solid framework"

For the Stéphanois coach, skipping the Coupe de la Ligue is not an option, the Verts begin with a new trip to Nîmes, Wednesday (9:05pm). The Stéphanois will go to the Stade des Costières to win.

Playing the same opponent in the span of five days. Does that change your preparation for the match?

No because it’s another competition. Whether it be Nîmes or another club, it remains a Cup round that we have to pass. We’re tackling it differently than a Championship match because it’s a do-or-die match. Tomorrow evening, one team will remain in the race, the other will be eliminated. You have to play so that you don’t leave with any regrets.

Is it in moments like these that you think of changing your starting lineup?

It’s not a change to the starting lineup. Tomorrow, there will be a solid framework accompanied by some new additions with players who must show me that they want to stay on this team. We’re not skipping like we did last season when we played many substitute players in Troyes because, the following Saturday, we were playing a decisive match against Caen. (Jonathan) Bamba enabled us to win because I protected him and called him off the field after an hour during the previous match. One example: I leave (Mathieu) Debuchy here. He’s getting back to his old form but, three matches in ten days, and a short respite between Thursday and Sunday, that’s dangerous. It’s the same for (Wahbi) Khazri and (Loïc) Perrin, who will have a training program adapted to their needs. The cups are important here. We’re going to try to control the two matches this week, to manage the team as best we can in order to win them.

How are you tackling throwing your hat into the ring for the Coupe de la Ligue?

Finding a place for the cups is complicated. Some time ago, I was with the favourite to win, where winning national titles was the strict minimum. It’s possible that at a given moment, PSG will get struck by bad luck. We’re going to give ourselves every opportunity, like many teams, to pass this round. Everyone can dream of going to the Stade de France. That would be very nice. We have not been winning for three games. To restore the team’s morale, I only know one solution: winning matches.

With a few days to take a step back, what is your opinion of the performance of your team Friday in Nîmes (1-1)?

I rewatched the entire match. I’m a bit less certain about the fact that each team had a better half. Nîmes pushed us back and took thoughtless risk to tie the game. After their goal, we dominated the match again and we had opportunities to win the game. The goalie was magnificent when he blocked (Rémy) Cabella’s high ball and (Yannis) Salibur’s shot, it was like a penalty kick. If Yannis had scored, there would have been a lot of positivity. But, as I repeat often, the most difficult think in Football is scoring.

What improvements for the team as a whole would you like to see as quickly as possible?

The paradox is that the goal that we conceded is due to a counter after a technical foul in the middle of the field. We need more consistency. We have an inconsistent team: when you look at the results, we’re capable of winning three matches in a row then not winning the next three; in the game, where you can dominate three quarters of an hour before a moment where your perform significantly worse; and in regards of the players, with the duos, one of the two is good one match then it’s the opposite the next match. But, when I see the first half, I’m confident. When everyone’s in unison....

What do you explicitly demand of your players?

You have to be more demanding of yourself in order to be more efficient in both areas. When you have possession of the ball, which is what I want, you have to anticipate technical errors a bit more. Every ball is important. There isn’t a single one that you can use calmly. It’s prohibited at this level. There’s still work to be done, of course, but I’m confident.

How did you manage the harsh weather conditions and the snowfall?

The employees of the club have been working like crazy since this morning to remove the snow from the synthetic terrain. Of course, we’ll be playing on grass Wednesday, but we can’t do it any other way. On the snow, the ball doesn’t roll. In a short time, we’ll have an indoor arena that will be brand new and at our disposal. It’s good news.
