Jakob Breum, AS Saint-Étienne's new attacking midfielder
22-year-old Danish attacking midfielder coming from Go Ahead Eagles (Netherlands), Jakk Breum is the second summer signing for Ian Cathro’s Verts.
This Friday, AS Saint-Étienne and Go Ahead Eagles (Netherlands) reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Jakob Breum. A native of Odense in central Denmark, the new Saint-Étienne player began his career at home with Odense Boldklub. He joined the youth academy and made his professional debut with OB at just 16 years old. This early debut was rewarded a few months later with the signing of his first professional contract (2021).
After several years playing for his hometown club, Jakob Breum left Denmark in 2023 to join the Netherlands’ Go Ahead Eagles. He quickly adapted to the Eredivisie: starting against Alkmaar just days after signing, he scored his first goal a few weeks later against Vitesse Arnhem.
The following season marked a major breakthrough for Jakob Breum and the Go Ahead Eagles. In the 2024–2025 season, the Deventer-based club won the Dutch Cup for the first time in its history. Jakob Breum, with 31 appearances, 11 goals, and three assists, helped secure the team’s spot in the Europa League.
Last season, the Danish attacking midfielder got his first taste of European competition, playing in six Europa League matches. A regular in the Eredivisie, Jakob Breum posted impressive statistics, contributing to 12 goals in 28 appearances.
Also Danish U21 international, Jakob Breum is the second summer signing for Ian Cathro’s Verts. Like Sohaib Naïr earlier this week, he joins the Saint-Étienne squad, where he will wear the number 10 jersey through 2030.
Jakob Breum: “I’m very happy to be joining a great club—one of the most successful in the country—with a huge fan base. I’m an attacking-minded player who loves to play forward, attack, and create scoring opportunities for my teammates to help my team win. I really want to bring my strengths to this team, which aims to be promoted at the end of the season, and I’ll do my best for this club. I can’t wait to meet the ‘Peuple Vert’ and I hope they’ll appreciate my contributions on the field.”
Loïc Perrin, Sporting Director of ASSE: “Jakob fits the profile we were looking for to strengthen our offense—namely, a player capable of making a difference in the final third of the field and being decisive. The technical skills in passing and ball handling that he has demonstrated over the past three seasons align with Ian Cathro’s style of play.”
Jakob Breum's "Vert l'Avenir" commitment
As part of its “Vert l'Avenir” CSR initiative, AS Saint-Étienne invites each of its employees—including its players—to get involved in one of the four areas of focus of its Cœur-Vert association: Environment, Citizenship, Sports for All, and Health.
Jakob Breum will be particularly involved in initiatives related to Sports for All.
