Heading to the Round of 16!
Against Olympique de Marseille, a solid second-division side, Les Vertes avoid a setback and qualify (2-1) for the Round of 16 in the Coupe de France.
A Few Days After the Defeat Against Reims (0-3), Les Vertes Make Their Coupe de France Debut. Just days after their league loss to Reims (0-3), Laurent Mortel and his team began their Coupe de France journey this Sunday at the Salif-Keita stadium. Despite Marseille’s consistent pressure on every opportunity, it was the Vertes who dominated the early stages of the match. With numerous set pieces, they came close on several occasions to breaking down Marseille’s defense, but Verdier held firm on her line. It was a match for the goalkeepers, as ASSE’s Emma Templier, supported by her central defensive duo of Lisa Martinez and Easther Mayi Kith, was equally vigilant. Unfortunately, Mayi Kith had to leave the pitch injured just before Marseille opened the scoring late in the first half. From a corner, Khezami won her duel to head the ball into the net (ASSE 0-1 Marseille, 43’).
After conceding this goal against the run of play, Les Vertes returned from the locker room determined to turn the game around. They didn’t take long to make their intentions clear, applying strong pressure, including a powerful strike from Amandine Pierre-Louis that rattled the Marseille crossbar. The hosts kept pushing as the hour mark approached, and captain Solène Champagnac equalized with a deft lob from the edge of the box (ASSE 1-1 Marseille, 60’). However, Marseille weren’t willing to let Les Vertes regain control so easily and disrupted the game with fierce challenges in a physical contest.
Amandine Pierre-Louis was at the heart of the battle, driving into the box and unleashing a powerful shot on the run, leaving the Olympian goalkeeper with no chance and putting her team ahead (ASSE 2-1 Marseille, 76’). Les Vertes, fueled by their mental resilience, held firm through a tense finish to secure the victory!
This success propels Les Vertes into the Round of 16 of the Coupe de France, set to take place the weekend of January 25. Next up, an away match at Fleury next week!
