Eirik Horneland: "Unable to respond effectively"
AS Saint-Étienne's head coach, Eirik Horneland, addressed the media following his team's 3-1 defeat to Monaco.
A difficult scenario
We started the match poorly by conceding a goal immediately, which was emotionally challenging. Nevertheless, we needed to react and fight, as we have throughout the season. We attempted to create opportunities, but there was too much distance between our players and between the lines, making it difficult to establish connections. Despite this, at halftime, we felt we could make adjustments. In the second half, we made some changes and fought to bring more quality to our play. We became more dangerous and managed to score a beautiful goal. The atmosphere in the stadium was excellent at that moment, and we had good momentum. However, Monaco scored their second goal just three minutes later, following a defensive lapse on our part. After that, we were unable to respond effectively. This match was particularly challenging, and we must analyze our performance to improve in future games.
A More Pragmatic Opponent
Overall, Monaco was better than us. We fought to react in this match, but they were more effective in key moments. In terms of quality, there's a gap between our teams, and that's also why Monaco was able to capitalize better on those strong periods. I think that on a very good day, we could have done something against such a team. But that wasn't the case, and this match was difficult. Keeping high intensity throughout the entire match is still challenging for us.
The last two games
Regarding the last two matches, we know we'll have to win them. By being more effective both defensively and offensively, but especially by continuing to believe, which isn't easy after such a grueling and exhausting season, it's possible. I hope the players are psychologically ready for these challenges. They've shown they can respond, even when trailing. But it won't just be about grit or fighting spirit; we'll also need discipline and quality to win these matches. Playing for this club is a great responsibility, and winning these next two games is part of that responsibility.
