After Söderlund was sent-off in minute 26, the Verts resisted for more than an hour and even scored a goal thanks to Hernani. Guingamp unfortunately evened the score and then scored a second goal in the last minute.
With 75% of ball possession and 15 shots in the first half, Guingamp showed they really wanted to win the game right from the beginning. The red card showed by the referee to Alexander Söderlund changed the game as the Verts had to defend during the last hour, trying to keep as much united as possible.
In the second half, Jean-Louis Gasset put one more defender on the pitch in order to earn at least one point. His strategy almost worked as his team even scored the first goal on one of their rare opportunities. On a wonderful assist given by Rémy Cabella, Hernani scored his third goal of the season in the League and enabled the Verts to take the lead (EAG 0-1 ASSE, 67). However, Jessy Moulin and Saint-Etienne were surprised three minutes after by a vicious Benezet free-kick (EAG 1-1 ASSE, 70). At the end, after having resisted for more than an hour, the Verts conceded a second goal from Briand (EAG 2-1 ASSE, 90+5) and did not earn the point they would have definitely deserved for the last 2017 game.
