Down to ten men, Les Verts lose against Boulogne
Trailing on the scoreboard and then reduced to ten men by Boulogne, Les Verts lost on their home turf and remain in fifth place, four points behind second place.
Context
After a particularly frustrating defeat in Reims (1-0) last Saturday, Les Verts failed to pull off the big win on matchday 20 that would have put them back in contention with the leaders. Against Boulogne, they have only one goal: to get back to winning ways.
Starting XI
Without Chico Lamba and Mahmoud Jaber, Eirik Horneland has had to reshuffle the starting 11 he fielded in the last two games. Kevin Pedro and Joao Ferreia are in the starting line-up, along with Igor Miladinovic and Irvin Cardona.
Game scenario
The match got off to a bad start for Saint-Étienne. In a quick forward move, Boulogne caught them off guard and punished Les Verts through Lecolier (0-1, 8'). And the match got even tougher a few minutes later. Despite Gautier Larsonneur's alert save from a shot by El Farissi (18') and a strike by Irvin Cardona (21'), Saint-Étienne found themselves reduced to 10 men after Joao Ferreira was sent off (27'). However, they refused to admit defeat, with Lucas Stassin pulling one back (31') and resisting a Boulogne header.Eirik Horneland replaced two players at half-time, bringing on Zuriko Davitashvili and Nadir El Jamali (46'), and Saint-Étienne came close to equalizing, but Lucas Stassin was caught by Gourville (52'). Despite being a man down, Les Verts tried to make the most of every possession, but Boulogne was well organized, conceding little space and taking their chances when they came, as with Fatar's shot (78'). The second half was played at a slow pace and ended with the score unchanged. Les Verts lost 0-1.
Coming next
Frustrated by the disastrous outcome of their match against Boulogne, Les Verts will host Montpellier next Saturday (8 p.m.).
