Claude Puel : “The reality of the top level”
For the General Manager of the Verts, the series of matches constitutes a permanent challenge for a club competing in the UEFA Europa League. He is very attentive to the recovery of his players, who returned Friday morning from Ukraine and who will face Nantes this Sunday (5 pm).
Looking back, do you have another opinion concerning your trip to Oleksandria?
At the end of the day, and even if there was much disappointment at the blow of the final whistle, this tie (2-2) does not necessarily change the situation. If we had defeated Oleksandria, we would have still been forced to achieve two successful performances during the last two matches. During the first half, we displayed great solidarity and we knew how to pass well. In light of this start, it’s normal to be disappointed and frustrated. Oleksandria did not make things difficulty for us in regards of our structured plays. On the other hand, we were embarrassed by their direct game and their air balls in front of the net. We must use this match in order to learn to respond to such athletic challenges. We’re working to better control these matches through better pall possession.
Less than three days separate a UEFA Europa League match from the following championship match. Is this a huge disadvantage?
This is the particularity of the UEFA Europa League and the great difference with the Ligue des Champions whose matches take place Tuesday or Wednesday. The UEFA Europa League is a competition that requires us to optimize our recovery time. At this level, there isn’t only physical freshness but also mental freshness, which affects the team because everyone is concerned by the deadlines. And we’re playing every game to the max. The series of matches obliges us to remain competitive and to refocus on the match that comes next. It’s a learning curve because that’s the reality of the top level.
How do you explain the good beginning of the season for FC Nantes?
FC Nantes is a dynamic team and very well organized. They possess quick offensive players who know how to use openings and hurt their opponent. They defend well collectively. Not having played this week, they will also be fresh.
