ASSE 2-1 SM Caen: at the Geoffroy-Guicard stadium and nowhere else !

Three matches in the Cauldron, three victories! After Nîmes (2-0) and Toulouse (2-0), the Verts once again tasted victory by dominating their match against SM Caen. Behind by one goal since the 11th minute of the match, the Stéphanois then turned the table on their opponent to win the game.

Jean-Louis Gasset said it before the match in Troyes, last Tuesday: “It’s at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium that we’ll earn points.” He repeated this yesterday, in a much clearer way, explaining that the difference between ASSE and other teams was their fan base. The fans pushed the Verts to this extremely important victory for their ranking, their third victory of the year on their home turf. The Stéphanois return to 14th in the rankings, inspiring confidence in their fans before their match in Amiens next Saturday. Which already promises to be a difficult match but one that the Verts will play with a new state of mind.

As proof of their importance, Jean-Louis Gasset used his three new recruits— Neven Subotic, Yann M’Vila and Paul-Georges Ntep—to form the backbone of the Stéphanois formation. These new additions to the team were quickly disheartened following the onset of the game when Ronny Rodelin opened the score for Caen at the 11th minute (ASSE 0-1 SM Caen, 11). After the first half of the game, the team even feared the worst when a shot from Julien Féret almost earned a second goal for Caen before the ball hit the goalpost and rolled along the goal line but not past it (32).

It’s as if the Verts were reawakened when Sébastien Moreira, who was injured, was replaced by another referee. Kévin Monnet-Paquet passed the ball to Paul-Georges Ntep who scored the first goal for ASSE (ASSE 1-1 SM Caen, 35). A goal made possible by a feint made by Rémy Cabella that completely unsettled the Normand defensive line.

Finally, Jonathan Bamba scored the Verts’ second goal, the goal that would win them the match (ASSE 2-1 SM Caen, 78). While the Verts did not manage to score any more goals, they did manage to create more openings to score: Ole Selnaes (80), Robert Beric (85) and Jonathan Bamba, once again (88), which, along with their second victory in a row on their home turf, is evidence of the Verts’ incredible performance and the distance that they are putting between themselves and their opponent below in the table.
