A well-deserved point in the end
On the rebound after a defeat at Rodez, it was a very young U19 National team who came away from Monaco with a point after a thrilling 2-2 draw.
A fortnight after their defeat at Rodez, ASSE's U19Ns were keen to get things back on track at Monaco. However, it was a young team that travelled to the Principality. At kick-off, Tom Teillol and Maxime Lengué Lenou, regulars in the U17N squad, took their places in the starting eleven. Les Verts soon got going, however. Sonny Yvars took advantage of Mamadou Konté's good pivot work to slide the ball into the back of the net (Monaco 0-1 ASSE, 13th). However, ASM soon equalised (Monaco 1-1 ASSE, 23rd). With the game wide open, Monaco waited until stoppage time for the final whistle to sound, thinking they had won (Monaco 2-1 ASSE, 90th). But the Les Verts, valiant and combative, fought to the end and equalized at the last second thanks to Issam Cheikh (Monaco 2-2 ASSE, 90th+2). The end of the match was whistled on this action and gave the Stéphanois a deserved and encouraging point.
Coach's reaction
“We went out looking for a good point, which we really deserved. The boys got it with play, talent and self-sacrifice. We played a good, consistent match! We had a younger team, but the osmosis between the younger players, some of whom were new to this level, and the older ones really worked. I'm pleased with what we were able to put together. It's satisfying, when you work on things, to see them come to fruition in a match.”
